Services
Schultz Engineering Associates, Inc. was founded in 1988 by Dr. William L. Schultz as a means for doing electrical engineering and design work.
The company has been involved with many marine industry projects and has worked with companies including FLUME and Hyde Marine designing the control system components for various marine systems (for more information see the Marine Section/Tab).
Products with components designed by Schultz Engineering have been sold to the US Navy, Canadian Coast Guard, and other customers in the maritime trades.
Control of List during the loading and unloading of cargo can be particularly acute for roll-on roll-off (RO-RO) ships.
Cargo loading ramps, particularly ramps at the stern (or bow) of the vessel must provide for the twisting that occurs as the vessel's list increases.
The Flume HEEL-AWAY List Control System maintains the ship at zero list by rapidly pumping ballast water between ballast tanks at the port and starboard of the ship.
The electronic control system (ECU) designed by Schultz Engineering for Hyde Marine Systems, provides the list sensor and the control algorithms and circuitry necessary to monitor and control a high speed propeller pump and its associated hydraulic power source.
Roll stabilization by means of a ship's rudder (RRS) was first designed and marketed by SSPA of Sweden.
The system designed by Schultz Engineering for Hyde Marine Systems utilizes SSPA's algorithm (under license) with modern microprocessor and display technology.
RRS is attractive for several reasons: (1) Every ship has a rudder, no new external control surfaces need to be installed.
RRS works by moving the ship's rudder rapidly to provide roll damping in response to roll motions.
Vessel steering is usually not affected because ships change direction slowly in response to changes in rudder angle.
